Agnes Mangelli Obituary

Agnes Gallagher Mangelli left this earth on Monday, May 29th, 2023, at her “beautiful home” surrounded by her large, crazy family. Agnes (Ag, Aggie, Mom, Gam) was born on January 20, 1938, at Margarette Hague Hospital in Jersey City to James and Elizabeth (McGuiness) Gallagher. Agnes grew up in Bayonne and was predeceased by her loving parents, her brothers Francis, Daniel and Neil Gallagher, her sister Mary Herrmann and her incredibly special nephew Kevin Gallagher. Agnes met the love of her life Nicholas Mangelli in 1952  in Bayonne, when they were in high school and they spent the rest of their lives by as true partners. Aggie and Nick were married on September 13, 1959, at St. Andrews’s Roman Catholic Church in Bayonne. Agnes loved Bayonne and made it her home until 2010 when her and Nick moved to Surf City, New Jersey to enjoy the Jersey Shore in their golden year. They loved having a house full of family and friends, holidays, barbeques, and happy hours on the deck or just sitting on their porch watching the sunset with their beloved poodle “Cappy” who predeceased Agnes by just a few weeks. Although she was not in Bayonne any longer, it was a place that remained near and dear to her heart and she could remember events, times, places, and dates up until the day of her death. Everywhere Agnes went in Bayonne, she knew people and her family always said that “she worked the room.” Many dinners where delayed as Agnes went table to table talking to people, she called friends.

Agnes is survived by her loving husband Nick who gave her an amazing life and cared for her with immeasurable love until her final breath. Agnes’s self-proclaimed greatest accomplishment was her family and she took every opportunity to brag to everyone she knew about her “kids.” In addition to her husband, Agnes is survived by her four children Mary Beth Caley (Joseph), AnnMarie Tatte (Carlos), Patricia Reiter (Mitchell) and Nicholas Mangelli (Christine Franzo). While Agnes loved her children, nothing quite compared to her grandchildren who were the sunshine of her life. She leaves behind nine amazing grandchildren to cherish her memory Christopher Ward (Cassie Bendana), Nichole Tatte, Julia Caley, Rachel Reiter, Gabriel Reiter, Vanessa Mangelli, Max Reiter, Nicholas Mangelli, and Lilli Rose Reiter and how extra blessed was Agnes to be able to have, love, cherish and spoil a great- granddaughter Annabelle Ward. In addition to the “original four,” Agnes had the honor to become a mom to her nephew  Daniel Gallagher (Elizabeth Mackiewicz) and to be able to be a grandmother to Daniel (Lindsey), Jamie (Martin), Caitlyn, Aiden (Dan) and Kevin (Michelle).

Agnes had the honor to love and be loved by many people in so many special ways. She opened her heart and homes  both in Bayonne and Surf City to everyone and made everyone feel welcome . People will remember special times with Agnes including  having a cup of  tea (in a proper teacup) at her kitchen table as well as the infamous closet of snacks on 31st street, her amazing cooking including her famous crab sauce and holidays made extra special by the love she showed to all. Agnes loved to have a full house and often suggested a last-minute party  on her deck in LBI and no one could ever say they left her home hungry. It was often that she would wake up saying, “let’s have a party.”

Agnes retired from New Jersey Bell after many years of service and was also a full-time volunteer at more places than we can recall including Number 3 School and Vroom School PTAs, Holy Family Academy Alumnae Association and Mother’s Club and St. Peter’s Prep Mother’s Club. Agnes also had the honor of serving as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Henry’s Parish in Bayonne, as a member of the Board of Directors for Bayonne Hospital/Medical Center as well as a longtime member and President of the Board of Directors of the Bayonne Community Mental Health Center. Aggie made many friends through these organizations and had an impact on more lives than we can count.

Agnes was loved by everyone who knew her and she made everyone feel like they were important and loved whether they born into her family or not. Agnes had the honor of having her in-laws Domenick and Rachel Mangelli live with her for much of her life and was loved by them as if she was their own daughter. Agnes was also predeceased by her nephew Edward Herrmann, and niece Beth Gallagher as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Agnes is also survived by her brother-in- law Joseph Mangelli (Ceil) of San Jose California as well as their children, Jeff (Debbie), Michele, Cari (Gillian) as well as her niece Kathy Herrmann. Agnes leaves behind a countless number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Although Agnes survived many health struggles throughout her life, she maintained a strong faith in God which was evident in the way she lived her life up until her final moments. Her family hopes to continue her legacy by living a life full of faith, kindness, and love. Agnes wants everyone to celebrate her amazing life and not mourn her death. She would want everyone to do something nice for someone in her memory.
