Clare Powanda (nee: Murray) passed away peacefully on May 5, 2021 at her Bayonne residence. She was born in Bayonne to the late Mary (nee: Sugrue) and Raymond Murray and was a lifelong resident. She was a legal assistant for Morgan Stanley, New York, for over 30 years, and was a 9-11 World Trade Center Survivor.
Clare was a devoted parishioner of Blessed Miriam Teresa Parish at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, serving on numerous committees, including the Liturgy and Carnival Committees. She was a member of its Rosary Society, a C.C.D. secretary, Soup Kitchen volunteer and supporter of the Food Pantry.
Clare also displayed her devotion to the community when at Morgan Stanley she was involved in a reading program for homeless children in New York City shelters.
She also had enjoyed genealogy.
Clare was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Marybeth Powanda. She is survived by her loving daughters, Eileen Powanda, Kathleen Geisler, and her husband, Robert, and Megan Powanda; her cherished grandchildren, Gabby and Samantha Fortune, and Mallory, Robert, Nolan and Ian Geisler; her dear sister, Mary Murray; her adoring nephew Robert Murray; her loving niece, Susan Dowd; and the loving Sugrue, Stewart and McDerby cousins. She was also predeceased by her dear brothers, Robert and Raymond Murray.
The funeral will be conducted by Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc. on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. A funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Miriam Teresa Parish at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blessed Miriam Teresa Food Pantry, 326 Avenue C, Bayonne, NJ 07002.
