Michael Slootsky Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Michael Slootsky announces his passing on Thursday, September 24th, 2020.

Mike was the beloved son of Murray and Helen Slootsky (Levy) and loved son in-law of Eugene McGovern and Georgina (Allan) and brother-in-law to Thomas J. McGovern, all deceased.

Mike is survived by his cherished wife of 48 years Georgene (McGovern), and loved children Ali and George Brattole and Matt and Sadie Slootsky. He was the adored “Pop” to five grandchildren, Michael Lucia, Riley and Emma Slootsky, and George and Lia Brattole. Mike was the brother of Scott Slootsky and Linda Bulla (Bob) and brother-in-law to Brian McGovern (Peggy) and Pamela McGovern. He had seven nieces and nephews and many loving cousins. Mike is also survived by many special and close friends.

Mike was a lifelong Bayonne, NJ resident. He graduated from #3 Elementary School and Bayonne High School and attended Pace University. During his childhood Mike could often be found playing basketball, a sport at which he excelled. Mike also spent considerable time working with disabled children under the guidance of his beloved Uncle Al, a mentor who would have a lasting impact on his life. Mike was also a talented piano player and enjoyed listening to all types of music.

During his career, Mike was an Office Supervisor for US Gypsum in Jersey City, and then became the owner of a Ding Dong Deli Store on Staten Island. For the last 34 years, he owned Sunrise Provisions, a distributor of Thumann’s products.

Mike had a strong work ethic and served his customers very well. He was a true man for others, always quick to help those who were sick or needed assistance, never expecting anything in return. He was honest, kind, sincere, and would go the extra mile for anyone in his or her time of need.

Mike loved the outdoors and being in nature. He enjoyed and competed in many outdoor activities; running multiple NYC as well as other marathons, cycling, cross country skiing, rock-climbing and kayaking. He also was a mentor to many in endurance sports.

Mike had a special sense of humor that was often on display with his friends and family and he appreciated a good joke. He was loved, respected and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Private funeral services were held under the direction of Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc.  An unveiling will take place in 2021.
