David P. Ockay passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at his residence. He was born in Bayonne to the late Mildred (nee: Rakowski) and John J. Ockay and was a lifelong resident. Dave was a dedicated mailman for the United States Postal Service for over 40 years and “neither snow nor rain” ever kept him from delivering for “his people.” But his true vocation was as a husband and as a father. A man for others, Dave was the king of thoughtful gestures, big and small; a storyteller whose legendary pranks brought joy to many while abiding by his golden rule to do no harm; and a playful spirit who never missed an opportunity to organize an impromptu scavenger hunt. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life – a well-made Manhattan, a long day at the beach, or the first flowers of spring.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Kinahan-Ockay; his loving sons, Michael Ockay, and his wife, Stephanie, and John Ockay, and his wife, Emily; his dear siblings, John Ockay, Mary Anne Arnold (Bob), Clement Ockay (Cynthia), Paul Ockay, Joan Delesky (Edward), and Amy Dellabella (Brian); his brother-in-law, Daniel P. “Tip” Kinahan; and many loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted by Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc. on Friday, August 31, 2018. A funeral Mass will be held at the Parish of St. John Paul II at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 30, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter’s Prep, 144 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302 (https://spprep.org/).
