Donald Cymbor, Sr. Obituary

Donald S. Cymbor, Sr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at his Bayonne residence, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  He was born in Kearny to the late Phyllis (nee: Fischer) and Theodore Cymbor and was a long-time resident of Bayonne.

A graduate of Queen of Peace High School, North Arlington, and American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, New York, Don was a funeral director for over 50 years.  He owned and operated Bayonne Memorial Home, originally Hoppe Funeral Home, which he purchased in 1973.  He and his wife, Janet, then acquired William Kohoot Funeral Home in 1989, and they managed the businesses together with their son, Donald Jr.

Don was a Past President of the Hudson County Funeral Directors’ Association, a Past President of the New Jersey State Funeral Directors’ Association, and a member of the National Funeral Directors’ Association. He also served the funeral industry as an appointee to the New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science.

As a business owner, he was involved in many endeavors in Bayonne, including being a Past President of Rotary, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Bayonne Economic Development Corporation, a member of the Bayonne Mental Health Board, a member of the B.V.N.A. Board, an appointee to the Bayonne Board of Adjustment and a co-founder of BCB Community Bank.

Don was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, beginning in 1989, serving the parish as a Eucharistic Member, a role he also served as a member of the parish of the Church of St. Henry from 1982 to 1989.

Don was an avid reader, enjoyed his summers at the shore and boating.  He loved playing golf, was a long-time member of Upper Montclair Country Club, and took great joy playing in countless Monday golf outings for various causes supporting the community.  He was also a New York Giants fan and season ticket holder for 44 years.

Don proudly served the nation as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Don is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Janet Levis Cymbor; his loving son, Donald S. Cymbor, Jr., and his wife, Alison; his cherished grandchildren, Kathryn Grace and Madeline Elizabeth Cymbor; his loving niece, Karen Graf; his dear nephew, Sean Levis; his cherished grandniece, Alyssa Graf; his dear sister-in-law, Mary Cymbor; and many loving cousins, family members, extended family members and dear friends.  He was predeceased by his loving brother, Thomas Cymbor.
