John “Jack” T. Hoey, 99, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at the New Jersey Firemen’s Home, Boonton. He was born in Jersey City to the late Anna and Thomas Hoey and was a long-time Hudson County resident.
Mr. Hoey was a Jersey City Firefighter, serving the city for over 30 years, prior to retiring in 1978.
Mr. Hoey proudly served the nation during World War II as a member of the United States Army and was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Award recipient.
A devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, he was known as “Pop” to many and always enjoyed a nice day at the racetrack.
Mr. Hoey was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evelyn, in 1992. He is survived by his loving daughter, Barbara O’Connor, and her husband, Jack; his cherished grandchildren, Shannon O’Connor and Janeen O’Connor, and her husband, Sean Sokolowski; his adoring great grandchildren, Wyatt and Sadie Sokolowski; dear sister Jane O’Conner; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his dear siblings, George and Thomas Hoey and Kay Gormley.
The funeral will be conducted by Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc. on Saturday, March 23, 2019. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. and interment with Military Honors will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 22, 2019, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
