Elizabeth (Betty) M. Garcia, R.N., passed away peacefully on December 11, 2023, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Born in Jersey City, N.J., Mrs. Garcia graduated from Bayonne Nursing School and was a practicing registered nurse. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, as well as her Masters of Science, from Jersey City State College.
Mrs. Garcia served as the President of the Hudson County Medical Society Auxiliary from 1979 to 1980. From 1979 to 1983, she served as Chairwoman of the Health Careers Committee of the Medical Society of New Jersey Auxiliary. Mrs. Garcia also served as President of the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary in 1992. She was a member of several organizations, including the American Medical Association Auxiliary, New Jersey Medical Society Auxiliary, Hudson County Hospital Auxiliary, St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, New Jersey Public Health Association, Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions, Board of Women’s Auxiliary for LaSalle Military Academy, and the Graduate Society of Health Sciences.
Mrs. Garcia left the nursing field in 1960 to raise her family, but returned to nursing in the 1980’s and practiced nursing for several years alongside her husband, Dr. Guillermo J. Garcia.
Mrs. Garcia is survived by her loving children, Brian Garcia (Leslie), Andrew Garcia (Rosa) and Mary Beth Sewald; and her adoring grandchildren, Alex, Marcus, William, Olivia, Maria Isabella, and Elizabeth Garcia; her dear siblings, Maura Horgan Driscoll, and her husband, John; her cherished nephews, Ian and David Driscoll; and her dear daughter-in-law, Rosa Luongo Garcia. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Guillermo J. Garcia and her parents, Neil and Margaret Horgan.
The funeral will be conducted by Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc. on December 22, 2023. A Funeral Mass will take place at Blessed Miriam Teresa Parish atSt. Andrew the Apostle Church at 10:00 a.m., followed by entombment at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on December 21, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
