Eric Nelson

Eric Glenn Nelson, Sr. passed away peacefully at his Cranford home on December 29, 2024, with his wife by his side. He was 64. Eric was born in Bayonne to the late Loretta (nee: Szablowski) and Herbert Nelson.

Eric was a graduate of Bayonne High School.  He joined the Bayonne Fire Department in 1985, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1994 and to Fire Captain in 2004.  Eric retired as Battalion Chief in 2017.

Eric thoroughly enjoyed sports.  He coached his daughter’s Little League softball team and led that team to a championship in 2007.

Eric was an avid cyclist and ran many marathons throughout the country.

One of Eric’s favorite passions was living down the shore on Chadwick Island, in a home which he shared with his wife.

Eric is survived by his adoring wife of 11 years, Linda, his son Eric, Jr., his daughter, Tracy, and her husband, James, his stepson Gregory, and his fiancé, Andreia, his stepson Evan, and his wife, Marisabel, his sisters Denise and Lori, his brother Herbert and his wife, Elaine, his brother James, and his wife, Lynn, and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and his pets, Lou and George.

Eric will be truly missed by all of his friends and fellow firefighters, as he was an exceptional person.  Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him was better for it.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 10:45 a.m. and St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
