Mary Ellen Calverley (nee: Givens) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at Bayonne Medical Center. She was born in Bayonne to the late Margaret (nee: Gallagher) and John J. Givens and was a lifelong resident, living in the same house for her entire life.
A graduate of St. Mary, Star of the Sea School and Holy Family Academy, Mary Ellen worked many years for Garrigan Associates at Newport Telecommunications, as well as for New Jersey Bell.
She was a fixture in the Irish community of Bayonne. She belonged to the Holy Family Mothers’ Club, HFA Alumni Mothers’ Club, and the Blessed Miriam Teresa Rosary Society.
Mary Ellen enjoyed her summers in Point Pleasant and traveled often to Ireland.
She loved nothing more than sitting down to have a chat and had a way of making everyone feel welcome and loved.
Mary Ellen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward F. Calverley. She is survived by her loving daughters, Mary Ellen Page, and Margaret Calverley; her cherished grandson, Matthew Page; her dear sister, Theresa Conk; her dear sister-in-law, Joan Givens; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who she loved dearly. She was also predeceased by her loving brother, Cornelius “Connie” Givens; and her dear son-in-law, Mark Page.
The funeral will be conducted by Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc. on Saturday, January 18, 2020. A funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Miriam Teresa Parish at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Friday, January 17, 2020, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the No Limits Café (https://www.nolimitscafe.org/donate/).
