Michalena Icklan (nee: McElroy) passed away peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Bayonne Medical Center. She was born in Jersey City to the late Helen (nee: Napieralski) and Francis X. McElroy and was a long-time Bayonne resident.
A graduate of Seton Hall University, where she met her husband, Richard, she then went on to receive her Masters degree at Jersey City State College (now known as New Jersey City University).
She was an English teacher, most notably at Hillside High School, who loved educating every student who walked through her classroom before her retirement after 30+ years of service.
She was a voracious reader, loved the beach and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard Icklan; her loving children, Richard Icklan, Jr., and his wife, Amy, Susan Icklan, and her fiancé, Scott Lachenauer, and Jennifer Icklan, and her husband, Matt Eckert; her cherished grandchildren, Casey, Jake and Reese Icklan, Isabella Oland, and Emelia Eckert; and her dear sister, Ellen Perrota and her husband Tom Perrota, along with nephews Thomas and Michael and their respective families.
She was predeceased by her beloved grandson, Charles Oland.
The funeral will be conducted by Bayonne Memorial Home, Inc. on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Monday, December 30, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday morning, December 31, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
