John J. Hurley, Jr., 70, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2017. Born in Bayonne, John was a long-time resident, prior to moving to Middletown and then Howell. A graduate of Marist High School and St. Peter’s College, John was the Assistant Manager of the 26th Street ShopRite in Bayonne, then served as Manager and was employed at Carl Inserra Supermarkets, Inc. prior to retiring after 46 years of service.
John was a founding member of the Bayonne St. Patrick’s Parade, a former Chairperson of the Parade Committee, and was honored as the Grand Marshal in 1998. He was a member of Ireland’s 32, the County Corkmen’s Association, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Shore, and the Knights of Columbus, Star of the Sea Council #371.
John was predeceased by his parents, Marie (nee: Donnelly) and John Hurley; his father-in-law, Vincent Decio; and his brother-in-law, John Decio.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine Hurley (nee: Decio); his loving son, Brian Hurley, and his wife, Sabrina; his loving daughter, Megan Kroll, and her husband, Marlen; his cherished grandchildren, Sophia Grace and Gabriella Rose; his dear brother Leo, and his wife, Irene; his dear mother-in-law, Lucy Decio; his dear nephew, Leo Hurley, Jr., and his wife, Ann Marie; his dear niece, Maureen Gilroy, and her husband, Patrick; and his grandnephews, Liam and Brendan Gilroy.
The funeral will be conducted on Saturday, February 18, 2017. A funeral Mass will be held at St. William the Abbot Church, Howell at 11:00 a.m. Private cremation will follow. Visitation will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, NJ, on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. William the Abbot Church, 2740 Lakewood-Allenwood Road, Howell, NJ 07731.
